The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office is warning about a new scam making the rounds: this one comes to your phone via a text message.
SCSO advises that scammers are posing as court officials, law enforcement officers, and even church leaders as part of the scheme. They typically reach out to victims with a pitch that includes asking for money or gift cards.
Since the message arrives as a text message, you might believe that the sender has your phone number, and they must be a friend or acquaintance. But that’s a dangerous assumption.
In the words of the SCSO: “These requests are never legitimate. Delete them and DO NOT send money or purchase gift cards.”
